Tips on Communicating with Legislators

Even if you have never contacted your legislator, you can do it! Here's how:

When a piece of legislation is in committee,

  • The best approach is to write to or talk with committee members before the public hearing takes place.
  • Committee members expect to be contacted by interested parties throughout the state on issues they hear in committee. Don't hesitate to contact them, even if they are not from your area!
  • Your goal is to show there is suport/opposition to the bill - explain why you suport/oppose it.
  • Use the suggested talking points or tell a related personal story if you have one.
  • The point is to articulate your /suport/opposition to the bill.

The Basics of Phoning a Legislator

    • Be respectful and considerate in your communication.
    • Refer to the member as Representative _____________.
    • Ask if it is a good time to talk.
    • Speak about why you oppose this bill - jotting down talking points beforehand may help, and tell your personal story if you wish.
    • If you get a negative reply from a legislator, respectfully ask why the member does not support your view. Please report any useful information to the NH Freedom to Marry Coalition (info@nhftm.org or call 603.223.0309).

The Basics of Writing to a Legislator

    • Written testimony is a very powerful tool, and is encouraged.
    • Write a letter to the chair of the committee explaining why you oppose this bill.
    • Be sure to send copies of the letter to all members of the committee.
    • Use the US Post Office to send your letter (e-mail is the least effective way to contact your legislator).

The Basics of Attending a Hearing

    • Try to get there early (parking can be a challenge). Your presence alone is a sign of importance of the bill.
    • You can sign a card that states you oppose the bill, but you do not have to testify.
    • You can submit written testimony without speaking, (1 copy for each committee member).
    • If you plan to speak, limit your remarks to about one minute, and practice beforehand.
    • If the points you had planned to make have already been made during the hearing, pass on your turn to testify, but make sure that you submit your written testimony
