History of NHFTM:
- Spring, 2006: Constitutional Amendment to ban gay and lesbian marriage is overwhelmingly defeated in the NH House of Representatives.
- Summer, 2005: Supporters spoke out for marriage equality at hearings across the state -- voiced overwhelming support for equality.
- Fall, 2005: Opened brick and mortar office space.
- Spring, 2005: Hired an Executive Director.
- Winter, 2005: Sponsored
showings of the film "Tying the Knot"
around the state, followed by community discussions and information sessions.
This was done around Freedom to Marry Day in February.
- Winter, 2005:
Lakes Region chapter formed to involve local volunteers in outreach.
- Fall,
2004: Co-sponsored Holly Near program, including an information booth,
gathering of petition signatures and volunteers.
- Summer, 2004: Attended
several public outreach events, such as Concord Market Days, with informational
booth, gathered signatures on Marriage Petition.
- Spring, 2004: Held May
17 rally to celebrate first legal marriages in Massachusetts and educate
NH residents about efforts to follow suit in NH.
- Spring, 2004: Organized
opposition to an anti-marriage bill in the NH legislature, including
public rallies, testimony, and training.
- Spring, 2004: UNH poll. Results
showed continued and growing support for legal marriage for gay and lesbian
couples in NH.
- Winter, 2004: Held event, "Engagement: The Next Step
to Marriage" featuring Mary Bonauto from Gay and Lesbian Advocates
and Defenders.
- November, 2003: Held rally at statehouse to celebrate the Goodridge
vs. Dept. of Public Health decision in Massachusetts.
- April, 2003: Commissioned first state-wide poll on marriage for same-sex
couples. This was the first poll ever conducted in the US. The poll found
a majority in favor of expanding marriage rights to lesbian and gay couples.
- October, 2002: Participated in the Dinner Reception and Auction for
Friends of the Southern NH HIV/AIDS Task Force at the Center of NH in
Manchester.
- October, 2002: Participated in and sponsored a tee for the Seacoast
Outright Fall Classic Golf Tournament at Bramber Valley Golf Course,
Greenland, NH.
- October, 2002: Participated in the Marriage Panel discussion moderated
by Shay Zeller of NHPR that was sponsored by the UNH Office of Multicultural
Studies. Other panelists included representatives from the Freedom
to Marry Coalition of Massachusetts and Equal Marriage, Canada.
- September, 2002: Unveiled the NHFTM banner, clothing, and bumper stickers
at the very successful Indigo Girls concert at Meadowbrook Farms in Gilford,
NH.
- Spring 2002: Co-sponsored a successful speakers training featuring
Leanne Tigert with PFLAG-NH.
- Spring, 2002: Held three legal and financial workshops in Plymouth,
Portsmouth and Conway.
- Fall, 2001: Held eight regional meetings to introduce NHFTM, get input
from the community and discuss educational strategies in those regions.
- March, 2001: Appeared on NHPR Exchange in opposition to HB 454. Recordings
of this show can be ordered
through NHPR.
- February 2001: Sent Action Alerts to action list which resulted in
16 people testifying and helping to defeat House Bill 454, the Anti-Civil
Union Bill.
